Ban the Gas-Powered Leaf Blower

Bad for the lungs, hard on the ears, there is no responsible way to use a leaf blower. And there is an alternative. Sign the petition at the Tuesday Market. Call or email council members. Why should we have to be assaulted daily by these dust bazookas?

9 o'clock Sunday morning on 2nd St. Some neighbor, huh? I go to every council meeting and take my three minutes. Join me t o fight for sanity.

More of an assault on the ears! Noise pollution at its worse. My neighbor uses one when he mows his lawn. It is horrible. He is a nice man but wins the prize for an array of loudest implements in the neighborhood. His mower and edger are also abominable.

Come to the council meeting tonight, 6:00. Tell them. My position is that every time someone uses a leaf blower he commits an assault.

I wrote a column on this topic a while ago in the Sun...afraid the council paid no attention then either. If I did not have other "fish to fry" I'd be there with you. As often happens, the citizens are way out in front of the council.

Put this on the other burner, Larry. Not only a quality of life issue, but a public health and safety issue. I've been hammering at the council for 7 months, in person and in print, and have around 200 signatures in support. If I could get the all to show up at a council meeting, I could get the members to enact a ban immediately.

What I told the city council last night, briefly: Do you not see the irony of passing pro-environmental resolutions on national issues like the Keystone Pipeline while avoiding a real opportunity to protect the environment here. You have a quantitative, measurable, simple equation: leaf blowers are a leading cause of air and noise pollution. Stop them and you bring that particular pollution to zero. How can you ignore this and still pretend to be environmentally conscious. It is becoming increasingly difficult to take seriously a council that bravely takes on issues thousand of miles away, while shrinking away from decisions that would be of immediate and significant value here in Sonoma. Please don't make yourselves irrelevant.

Recently the city sent a flyer to Sonoma maintenance landscapers about leaf- blower etiquette. Only Sonoma could conceive an oxymoron like that. Courteous assault? The only etiquette you can hope for is that he will ease up on the trigger when you cross his path.

If you want anyone to take you seriously Darryl, you need to calm down on the extreme rhetoric. Anyone who uses a leaf blower is "committing an assault"? Come on, that sounds loony.
