Local Company Partners with Nonprofit to Preserve Mission Sonoma

In partnership with Oakland-based nonprofit, CyArk, a world leader in digital preservation, and California State Parks, local tech company, 3D Virtual Design Technology, Inc. has launched a new effort to document Mission San Francisco de Solano.

The mission will be the fifth mission to be documented as part of CyArk’s El Camino Real theme study. Past projects have included Missions Dolores and Carmel as well as the Presidio in San Francisco.

Using the latest in reality capture technologies, such as 3D laser scanning and high definition photography, Mission Sonoma will gain a complete set of floor plans for the first time, further,  Mission curators will gain invaluable conservation tools. "I am excited to participate with CyArk and 3DVDT in this exciting endeavor to better document the Sonoma Mission. The information derived from the laser scans will benefit the mission’s stewardship and help inform the public of the site’s importance", says Breck Parkman, Senior State Archaeologist, Diablo Vista & North Bay Districts.

running parallel to the San Andreas Fault, the sites of El Camino Real de California are under threat of destruction. Several original structures along the Camino Real have already been destroyed by earthquakes, and many that remain are seismically unstable.  With the loss of these sites, we not only lose a physical building, but also an important piece of California history.  The El Camino Real program will include 3D digital documentation, free public dissemination of digital data from the missions, presidios, pueblos and other historic sites, and the development of content for conservation and education.

I invite you to visit our webpage to learn more about the documentation of Mission Sonoma at: http://archive.cyark.org/sonoma. Consider becoming a supporter of the project, we need community support to complete the project by our goal of August 30.
