New retirement community dedicated to caring for persons with memory loss

With the recent opening of The Terraces, Oakmont Senior Living has created new care options for local families with loved ones afflicted by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The intimate 33-unit community in Santa Rosa offers a continuum of specialized memory care services designed to meet the physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs of individuals with early to advanced stages of memory loss. By combining quality care and an uplifting and nurturing atmosphere, The Terraces helps those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia maintain quality of life, while keeping them safe, healthy, and happy.

The number of individuals with memory loss disorders continues to escalate each year, creating demand for specialized care that can compassionately and effectively handle their conditions as memory, judgment and reasoning skills decline. Many forms of dementia are degenerative; and as symptoms become more severe, drastic behavioral changes set in and the ability to perform daily living activities deteriorates.

“Memory loss is a very serious condition that slowly strips our loved ones of their independence and individuality, but with the right care, we can help them hold on to the steering wheel and better navigate developing obstacles,” said Jamie Escoubas, Vice President of Resident Services. “The Terraces is a testament to our commitment to give local families peace of mind that their loved ones are getting the best care and quality of life. ”

Located on the Fountaingrove Lodge retirement campus, The Terraces provides both private and semi-private suites. Specialty therapy and assisted care programs are designed to help prolong a sense of independence, improve communication and mood, encourage physical activity, and drive social interaction among residents. Daily activities include mind and body fitness classes, off-site excursions, music and art therapy programs games and social gatherings that keep residents active and engaged. The community also features amenities that reflect the interests of its residents, including a movie theater, bird aviary, work bench, outdoor garden and individual music stations.

Additional services range from gourmet cuisine, housekeeping and sleep monitoring to medication management, bathing and dressing assistance and ongoing health assessments. The Terraces staffs licensed nurses, care providers, medication technicians and activity directors to provide these services, interact with residents and offer medical and emergency response support 24 hours a day. The staff utilizes specialized communication and validation training to help keep residents at ease, and redirect behaviors. A fully equipped wellness center is also onsite to allow outside physicians and other healthcare providers to visit residents regularly.

“Individuals not receiving the right care or living without a full-time caregiver are more susceptible to dangers such as wandering, falls, self-neglect and social isolation,” said Escoubas. “Memory care communities like The Terraces are becoming essential to providing seniors with dementia the best chance at leading a comfortable and rewarding life well into their later years.”
