Social Advocates for Youth receives $25,000 grant from Northwestern Mutual

MILWAUKEE, May 1, 2014 – Contributing to the community is a way of life for Sharon Zimmerman. She is being recognized by Northwestern Mutual, through its Foundation, for her work with Social Advocates for Youth (SAY) as a recipient of the company’s 20th annual Community Service Award.

Zimmerman, a wealth management advisor at Northwestern Mutual – Santa Rosa, was chosen as one of four most exceptional volunteers across the country, earning her a $25,000 grant for SAY. The award identifies 16 Northwestern Mutual financial professionals that demonstrate exemplary service with a local nonprofit and awards the organization with a grant on behalf of the volunteer’s work.

SAY’s mission is to provide support, hope and opportunity to youth and families. They are dedicated to creating and supporting a caring community where all children, youth and families can grow, thrive and succeed. Zimmerman spends her time volunteering for the organization and serves on the board of directors as well as the fundraising committee.

“As I came to personally know the youth served by SAY’s counseling, employment training and low-income housing, I found them to be funny, hardworking and with big dreams,” said Zimmerman. “The award will help SAY impact even more young people in our community by helping to provide 63 much needed beds for homeless youth in Sonoma County.”

The nonprofit will use the grant toward building the Dream Center, which will offer affordable housing, job training and employment skills, educational support, and health and wellness services for youth and young adults.

“Achieving meaningful, lasting change in communities is only possible when someone takes the first step,” said John Kordsmeier, president, Northwestern Mutual Foundation. “The work Sharon does not only impacts those involved with the organization, but serves as a model for all of us to follow.”

The Community Service Program honors 16 financial professionals throughout the country who consistently work as exceptional volunteers in their communities. Since 1995, the company has donated more than $4 million to nonprofits on behalf of its representatives.
