Community Forum on Animal Care and Welfare Thursday

Meeting part of county-wide input on animal welfare issues

Sonoma County Animal Care & Control has been conducting community meetings all over the county, designed to get input and feedback on animal welfare issues. This information will be gathered together for a report to the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors.

If you're interested in the care and welfare of animals in Sonoma County, please attend  the Sonoma County Animal Welfare Community Forum on Thursday, April 25, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Sonoma Valley. It is hosted in partnership with Pets Lifeline.

This is a chance for you to hear updates about what's happening in animal services throughout Sonoma County, and to provide input that will help shape the future of animal services here.

An earlier community meeting was held April 10, at the Guerneville Regional Library. Police Chief Bret Sackett is Sonoma’s representative on the ASW.

It started last summer, when the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors asked Sonoma County Animal Care and Control to work with cities, partners, and other interested organizations to develop recommendations to foster community-wide collaboration in order to deliver the highest quality, cost-effective animal care and control services for Sonoma County.

The first step was to convene the Animal Services Workgroup, an ad hoc, short-term group comprising representatives from the County and animal services providers in each of the nine cities in Sonoma County. This group has drafted a vision, a framework, and a set of goals aimed at realizing efficient, collaborative, cost-effective animal services throughout our community.

At the Thursday meeting, there will be a brief presentation about the background and process of the Animal Services Workgroup, along with its draft vision and proposed goals for working collaboratively to meet the needs of animals in this community.

The information to be discussed is only a first draft, so it's important for community members in Sonoma Valley to weigh in with their opinions, observations and priorities. The greater portion of the meeting will be devoted to hearing your feedback on these proposed goals in order to ensure they're the right goals for our community.
