Five Things to Do This Week: Feb. 21

"My Fair Lady," vanishing bees, a quilting bee, and big transitions.

Today is Presidents' Day, celebrating the founding fathers: George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Though California life would've seemed far fetched to the pair (let alone living in American wine country...) enjoy a relaxing day on their behalf, while you rev up for all the events this week.

1. Catch My Fair Lady tonight at the . Don your most elegant hat and gloves and stroll over to the Sebastiani Theatre to see the movie version of George Bernard Shaw’s delightful play, starring Audrey Hepburn, Rex Harrison and Stanley Holloway. Proceeds from the film benefit the . Doors open at 6:30 p.m., show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets $8. Wine available by the glass. Details: (707) 996-9756.

2. Energy educator and author Richard Heinberg presents "Living in Transition."  The lecture covers Heinberg's thoughts on weaning ourselves from fossil fuel.  Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. in Burlingame Hall, 252 West Spain Street. Tickets are $10 at the door or $6 online.

3. Congressman Mike Thompson hosts a forum on the U.S. Debt Crisis, Thursday, Feb. 24 in Andrews Hall (). It's your chance to hear Congressional plans and to voice your own opinion. The forum, which starts at 6:30 p.m., is free.

4. Another environmental flick, Vanishing of the Bees will be screened at the  Friday, Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m. Co-sponsored by Cittaslow's "Pollinator Pals" and Beekeeper Shelley Arrowsmith of Arrowsmith Farms, the screening focuses on the collapse of bee colonies and the disastrous effect the subtle change might have for humans. Complimentary popcorn; bring your own beverage. An excellent film for teens. Event is free; parking is $6.

5. Sew a quilt for wounded soldiers at Broadway Quilts, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Regular quilters and beginners are both welcome to join; all the proceeds go to veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan.  Drop off other donations for the care packages at Broadway Quilts, (recommended items: cookies, socks, shampoo and toiletries.)  The American Legion Post 489 packs, wraps and ships the donated items to our soldiers overseas.
