Grab and Go Kids Planner

Take the family to explore trains, fire engines, Olive Oyl and Charlie Brown

It's time to get out! Sun is forecast for this weekend with Saturday looking especially promising. We've included some things to do, just in case it rains, but it's a good time to grab the kids and go.

Where/when: 630 Second St. W., across from Sonoma Marketplace. The Museum is only open during the week, M-F, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.

Why: Sonoma’s first fire engine (1889), a 1924 Seagrave fire engine, one of the first motor trucks used in the Valley. Life-size mannequins in fire-fighting outfits, ladders, fire-fighting equipment, and wonderful old photographs. A fun outing for the younger set.

HIKING the OVERLOOK TRAIL

Where/when: Start at the (126 First Street East), go to the right to the small lot next to the cemetery entrance. A sign marks the trails describing the route. /Daylight.

Why: A gentle two-mile round trip hike with breathtaking Sonoma vistas. A wonderful walk for any age. Wear study shoes to assure dry feet.

Pricing: Free

Where/when: Every weekend during the year; every day in the summer.

Why: An open-air train replica--three inches to a foot-- travels over 10 acres. One mile of track crosses five bridges, goes over trestles and through two tunnels.  A kid's petting and feeding zoo. Fun to do several times.

Pricing: Train: $3.75; rides $1.75 a ticket

OLIVE OYL &  ART IN THE OLIVE GROVE

Where/when:  In the Olive Grove and Gardens of , 23570 Arnold Dr., February 19 & 20, 11a.m. - 4 p.m. Rain or Shine!

Why: An Olive Festival Finale: special  visit by Marvel Comics funny character, Olive Oyl. Live music. Forty artists displayed in the Sculpture Garden. A lot to enjoy.

CHARLES SCHULTZ MUSEUM

Two outstanding events coming up this weekend at the Museum.

Peanuts: The Next 60 Years (Sneak Preview)

Where/when: Charles Schultz Museum, Santa Rosa at the corner of West Steele Lane and Hardies Lane; February  19, 1 -3 p.m.

Why: An advance peak at a new Peanuts special, Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown, conducted by animator Andy Beall. Sure to be fun.

Pricing: Museum admission, adults $10, youths and seniors $5.

Advance Lego Animation

When: Five Saturdays, Feb.10- March 19, 10 a.m. -1:30 p.m.

Why: Children learn to add sound, backgrounds to a film, then edit a short Lego movie under the instruction of Creative Associates artist, Peter Swehla. For children in Grade 4 and up. What a great experience!
