Rock Enthusiasts: Join This Montini Walk

Geologists, get your rocks of: the will offer a public outing on Saturday, April 14. from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Montini Open Space Preserve.  The outing, a “Rock Walk,” will teach participants about different geologic features of the property – which includes open grasslands, oak woodlands, and excellent outcroppings of basalt once coveted for cobblestone streets, and sunning overlooks to San Francisco and San Pablo Bays. 

The Preserve was protected by the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District (District) in December 2005 for recreation and preservation of its natural and rich historical significance, having been a working ranch since the time of General Vallejo. Encompassing 152 acres, the property is in and adjacent to the City of Sonoma. 

Due to some elevation gain and very uneven footing, the hike is rated intermediate to advanced: however, we’ll be pausing frequently to take in the sights.

Sonoma Ecology Center geologist and program director Rebecca Lawton will lead the hike.  She is co-author of the geology book Discover Nature in the Rocks and will donate a signed copy to any participating hiker who joins or renews membership with the Center ($50 annual fee).  

There is no charge for this outing, as it is made possible by the voters of Sonoma County who funded the District's work with a quarter cent sales tax.
