Rue Manouche was founded in San Francisco in 2009 by actor and French Blues singer Michel Saga, and guitarist Vic Wong. Rue Manouche plays music in the style of Gypsy Jazz or Gypsy Swing that was made famous by Jean "Django" Reinhardt in the 1930s. The origin of this style of music is largely French, and they often refer to it as "Jazz Manouche". Django was foremost among a group of Gypsy guitarists working in and around Paris in the 1930s through to the 1950s.

In the step of Django...

Django Reinhardt is rightly hailed as one of the greatest guitar players that ever lived. The many people who praise his accomplishments as a guitarist tend to overlook his roots in Gypsy culture and the musically fertile and polyglot Paris of the 1920”s. Django, and his companions, used all these elements, along with American jazz, to create this new music, but the Gypsy heritage seems to be the most important ingredient. Once you hear it, you can’t forget it! This style of music is sophisticated, and has a sentimental quality. It’s Gypsy jazz, and the popularity of this sometimes flamboyant, sometimes melancholic guitar music, is growing around the world. Aficionados everywhere have been forming bands, called Hot Clubs, in honor of Django Reinhardt’s famous Quintet of the Hot Club of France.

Many Gypsy Jazz musicians worked in Paris in various popular Musette ensembles. The Musette style waltz remains an important component of the Gypsy Jazz repertoire. Djengo was noted for combining a dark chromatic Gypsy flavor with the swing articulation of the period. Such combination is critical to this style of jazz. Djengo’s approach to music continues to form the basis for contemporary Gypsy Jazz guitar.

One night in Paris is an exciting and pleasurable trip to Paris’ Montmartre that combines talent, swing, poesy, fun, romance, and surprises!!!
