Sonoma Weekend Planner August 12-14

From Nashville songwriters and a Barn Dance to Drifting at Infineon Raceway and a honey harvest, we've got you covered this weekend. See if there's something here for you.

Friday:

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Joe Scutella will perform a special show at the tasting room. Joe Scutella is a 20-year veteran of the Nashville music business having written songs for country artists such as Rhett Akins, George Ducas, Melodie Crittendon, Patricia Conroy, Steve Fox, Billie Joyce as well as folk artists Donal Hinely, Ross Falzone and Peter Vesth. He is a regular performer at the legendary Bluebird Café in Nashville and has twice been a finalist at the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas in 1998 and 2010, as well as a New Folk finalist in the Napa Valley Wine and Music festival in 1999.

If you go: Tickets are $15 per person and include a glass of wine. This is a 21 and over show. The show is from 7 p. to 9:30 p.m. at Meadowcraft Wines, 23574 Arnold Drive in Sonoma.

Join 18 Reasons and for a good ol' fashioned barn dance to benefit 18 Reasons' youth programming and the Enviro-Leaders Internship Program! In addition to great local food and drink, there will be live music beginning with the opening act, Traffic Jam, a Sonoma teen band as well as bluegrass music featuring David Thorn Band and Middle Maki, square dancing with the Black Crown String Band, and games including horseshoes, wiffle ball, and lasso lessons and contest. There is also an option to camp out at the ranch following the event.

If you go: Tickets are $75, 6 to 18 years old are $25, 5 and under are free. Tickets can be bought by clicking here.  The dance is from 4 p.m. to midnight at Circle Jr Ranch 22661 S Central Avenue in Sonoma (off Hwy 12/121). For more information email info@hwy12properties.com.

 

Saturday:

It’s summertime and Saturday Market’s bounty of fresh produce, seasonal fruit, local cheeses, fresh flowers,  sustainably-farmed meat and art by local artists is enough reason to make your way over to the Community Center. Celebrate sustainability in all its forms at the Saturday Market.

If you go: The market is open from 9 a.m.to 1 p.m. at the , 276 E Napa Street in Sonoma.  Don’t forget to bring your own bags!

 

Saturday:

It’s open mic night in the Reading Garden. Bring out your best stories, poems, chants, yodels, jokes and theramins.  All are welcome. Five minute time limit for readers and performers.

If you go: Admission is $5 and the event begins at 5 p.m. at , 130 E Napa Street in Sonoma.

 

Saturday and Sunday:

Drifting takes center stage at with Summer Jam. There will be action in the Solo, NOS Team Tandem and the featured category of the weekend, Tandem. The weekend will also feature an incredible Summer Car Show on Sunday, Aug. 14, with more than 100 machines, including Mazda, Nissan, BMW, Subaru and more. Racing will take place on Turns 2-4 of the 12-turn road course, as the drivers work to control a high-horsepower car while it slides sideways at high speed.  Drivers are judged on execution and style rather than who finishes the course fastest. On Saturday, there will be Solo exhibitions, the Team Tandem main event and practice for Tandem. The action gets hot on Sunday, with practice, qualifying and the main event for Tandem. The winner from the Tandem competition will be awarded $1,000. The event is hosted by Sonoma Drift, powered by NOS Energy Drink.

If you go: Action gets under way each day at 10 a.m. and admission is $15 per day for spectators, and $20 for show car registration. You can register your show car in advance by emailing CreamLifeEvents@gmail.com. Infineon Raceway is at 29355 Arnold Drive in Sonoma.

 

Saturday: 

Community volunteers extraordinaire, Bill Wiebalk and Will Ackley, will lead a honey harvest at the Sonoma Garden Park today at 10:00 a.m. If you would like to observe or help extract honey, meet at the greenhouse promptly at 10:00 a.m. Dress comfortably for working in the greenhouse. There will be no contact with honeybees. Honey samples will be available for all to taste after 11:00 am in the barn.
 For those wishing to help remove frames of honey from the hives, meet Bill and Will at the hives at 8:30 a.m.  Wear long pants, a light-colored long-sleeved shirt, shoes, and socks. We will provide gloves and veils.
