Sonoma Weekend Runs the Gamut, April 5-7

From A (art) to B (beer) and on through the alphabet, a weekend of fun in the Sonoma Valley

This weekend in Sonoma finds a new art exhibit, stage auditions, live music and the return of the return of Rodriguez at the Sebastiani

Arts Opening: “Roger Shimomura: Minidoka on My Mind,” opens tonight, Friday, April 5 at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art,” with an artist’s reception at 6 p.m., for members only. (Show up at the door with your membership dues and they’ll let you in.) The show confronts viewers with issues of ethnicity, discrimination and racial stereotypes, all informed by the period Shimomura was incarcerated in a World War II concentration camp in Minidoka, Idaho. The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday, $5 admission.

Have a Beer:  60 of them in fact, tonight in SCC’s annual Beervana. Over 30 microbreweries contribute a couple of their best – lagers, ales, porters and more -  plus announcement of the winning amateur brewing taste-off. See you there, 5:30 at the Veterans Memorial Hall, $45 at the door, a benefit for Sonoma Community Center.

Held Over! The award-winning documentary “Searching for Sugar Man” is held over another weekend at the Sebastiani Theatre, an unusual response to strong attendance and positive response. If you haven’t seen this intriguing film about a mysterious singer/songwriter whose career fell through the cracks in the 1970s, you have three  more chances this weekend, at 8:30 on Friday and Saturday, 7:30 Sunday.

The other film on screen  is Dustin Hoffman’s well-received directorial debut, “Quartet.” It stars a number of senior stars including Maggie Smith, the arch doyenne of Downton Abbey; it shows at 6:00 pm on Friday and Saturday, 3 and 5:30 on Sunday.

The Sebastiani will be percolating the next couple weekends, with the Sonoma Independent Film Festival April 10-14, and the Sonoma Music Festival April 19 & 20. More details on these events coming.

Out and about in the Valley: Tonight it’s "Comedy in the Cave" at Gloria Ferrer, starting at 8:00. Not one but two funny folk: Altadena’s Jabari Davis brings us humor combining down and dirty street smarts with thought provoking intellect, after up-and-coming talent Priya Prasad opens the show. $25 per person, club price: $21.25, includes a glass of featured wine or bubbly.

B.R. Cohn restarts their monthly Classic Car Cruise-in, from 11 to 4 on Saturday. Owner Bruce Cohn is crazy about his automobiles, and this weekend the spotlight falls on Norcal Chevelle and Caminos. Plus the winery’s wines and olive oils, other food and gift items, and the proprietor’s own car collection including a 1933 Willys Roadster, a 1941 Willys Panel Wagon, 1934 Henry Ford Five-Window Coupe and a 1946 Ford Woody Wagon.
