International Space Station Visible in Bay Area Skies Tonight

Track the space station using NASA's iPhone app tonight; another chance to see the station Thursday

Stargazers and space enthusiasts could have a chance to see the International Space Station in the skies above the Bay Area tonight.

Weather permitting, the space station will be visible in the northwest sky at 7:32 p.m. It will look like a bright star moving more slowly than an airplane, according to NASA Ames Research Center.

The space station, which is about 220 miles above the earth's surface, will be visible for about 20 seconds before it sets in the northwest horizon.

There will be another chance to see the space station at approximately 7:17 p.m. on Thursday, according to NASA Ames. On that day, the station will appear from the west and set in the southeast.

NASA has an iPhone app that tracks the current position of the space station and helps viewers locate it and other spacecraft orbiting earth. A link to download the NASA app can be found online at www.nasa.gov/centers/ames/iphone.

Schedules for International Space Station passes, and other celestial events, can be found at the wonderful site Heavens-Above (http://www.heavens-above.com/). Just tell the site you are in Petaluma using the "database" option from the menu and all will be revealed. The ISS pass tonight will be high (77 deg) and bright (-3.6 magnitude). I never tire seeing the ISS pass high over us; it's majestic.
