IRS Delays Opening of Tax-Filing Season till January 31

Yesterday, the IRS announced that 2013 e-file will open on Jan. 31, 2014. This date is later than the agency historically begins processing returns.

Why the delay?

We heard from the IRS back in October that the government shutdown would cause a delay to the start of the filing season.

What does it mean for me?

On one hand, not much. You can begin preparing your return now. H&R Block offices will open on Jan. 6 and H&R Block online is available for download.

However, even if you have your return completely prepared, the IRS will not receive it until Jan. 31. After that date, it will take the normal processing time before you receive a refund, if it is due.

Most importantly: despite the filing delay, the deadline to file your taxes is still April 15. Read the full announcement from the IRS.
