Highway 12 Trees Get the Ax

A county wide road modification program hits the Springs.

Caltrans will be making way for road improvements -- one tree at a time -- on  Highway 12 when crews begin removing trees in Sonoma County today.

Twenty trees near the Schell-Vista Fire Protection District property at 22950 Broadway, where state highways 12 and 121 intersect, will be removed, Caltrans officials said.

The goal of the project is to realign Highway 12 to a straighter path, build a new right-turn-only lane at that intersection, and upgrade traffic signals.

While most of the trees will be removed without any impact on traffic, about five trees are large enough to require temporary closures of Highway 12, according to Caltrans.

The tree removal is expected to be completed within a few days, and construction on the realignment will begin sometime this summer.
