Contra Dance Class at the Grange

The Third Monday Contra Dance Class is for the entire family, from kids to grandparents. Learn how to Do-si-do, Left-hand Star, Allemande Left, and Balance and Swing Your Partner when the caller, Ken Olcott, walks everyone through each dance before the music starts. Contra dances are in the "reel" format: two long lines, with partners in opposite lines. After the Irish or bluegrass music starts, the caller keeps calling so no one gets lots.

Contra dancing has a long history in New England and now college students like to dance these old-fashioned moves to Techno music. It is typical that dancers find a new partner for each dance, and women ask men to dance as often as the other way around. Many people have found this 'entry level' dancing, which requires no memorization, gives them confidence to try ballroom dance.

Wear cool clothing and comfortable shoes. Youth under 26 get in free, $5 is requested for adults.
