The Jack London Piano Club
celebrates spring with a “Rites of Spring” themed piano recital to benefit Jack London State
Historic Park. Since 2011 the Piano Club has
presented quarterly concerts, raising over $7,000 to benefit operations at the
Park.
Guest vocalist will be
Laura Benward, an accomplished musician who has performed widely, locally and on tour
in musicals, light opera and folk programs. She is a member of the Vintage
Singers trio whose repertoire includes many vintage folk classics.
Pianists performing at the concert include Jud Goodrich, Deborah Knapp, Rubina
Hovhannes, Larisa Migachyov, Zinaida Milyavsky, Esfir Ross, and Jim
Wittes.
Until
1988 Jack London's 1901 Steinway grand piano sat untouched for 30 years, since
the death of Jack's wife, Charmian. At the urging of Park Rangers Greg Hayes
and Matt Atkinson, Park Volunteer Jud Goodrich rounded up six other pianists
launching the Jack London Piano Club to once again make music with the
cherished piano. Since then, every weekend afternoon the Museum in the House of
Happy Walls has rung with live piano music to entertain museum visitors. Over 60 pianists over
the years have been members of the Club, and currently there are
25 active volunteer pianists.
