May is in Bloom at Jack London’s Garden

Visit Jack and Charmian's dream garden in full flower, including the big heritage oak in its last summer, and explore the wildflowers beyond the cottage grounds.

With spring in full bloom, Jack London Park celebrates the seasonal beauty with two special events in May.

Saturday May 11 from 10 a.m. to noon, Cottage Gardener Jenny Randall shares “Jack’s Garden, The Story Behind the Cottage Garden,” unraveling the layers of garden history surrounding Jack and Charmian London’s cottage garden. Learn about turn of the century plants, what the garden was like when Jack and Charmian lived in the cottage, what happened after Jack died and how Jenny maintains the sense of place that still imbues the garden today.

These questions and more will be answered with a presentation of historical photographs under the heritage oak and then move to the garden for an intimate tour led by Randall and a faithful core of volunteers. Discover Randall’s challenges that require balancing battles between wildlife and the plants while maintaining the beauty of this historic garden throughout the year. This special event includes a picnic lunch under the heritage oak tree. Cost, including lunch, is $30. Reservations available online.

Saturday May 25 brings the Late Spring Wildflower Walk, the final in our series of guided spring wildflower walks. The spring wildflower season is winding down but there is an array of beautiful wildflowers that bloom at this time of year into summer. In fact lingering spring bloomers team up with the late bloomers to make this a dazzling time of year to view wildflowers.
