Do You Have Your Halloween Costume Yet? A Mom's Guide

Whether you like to shop locally or hit the internet, here's your go-to Halloween costume shopping list.

Halloween decorations are starting to pop up and the leaves are starting to fall. Half of October is already over! Have you even begun to think about Halloween costume shopping?

When my kids were just babies they wore handmade costumes or hand-me-downs from a friend. But now that they are both school aged, they have much loftier dreams-Star Wars characters, Nickelodeon characters, Disney princesses, just to name a few. And the discussion of Halloween and what costume they want to wear starts in July! Far cry from the easy days of toddlerhood.

Not only is it harder to find good costumes, that will last more than one wearing, and are less expensive than my wedding dress, but they need to be comfortable to wear to school and will be warm enough for trick or treating on Halloween night.

So, I hit the streets and talked to a few friends and have come up with the ultimate Halloween shopping list for Sonoma parents to make your Halloween shopping days a little easier! Here are your options (and if I missed anything, please add it to the comments!)-

I want to stay in Sonoma and shop locally:

Sandbox: Located in the Whole Foods Shopping Center. They have two racks of great Halloween costumes in sizes up to 16. Prices started at $7.99 and the quality is amazing! Definitely have a look especially if your child hasn’t decided on a costume yet.

The Church Mouse: Both the store on the square at 15 East Napa and at 18068 Sonoma Hwy in Boyes Blvd have a good selection of costumes for all ages with reasonable prices. Hours are 10-6, Monday thru Sunday.

//Dollar Tree: All had similar items. Basic costumes in all sizes and at Rite Aid they were already discounted at 25% off. They all also have a nice selection of accessories-fake eyelashes, hair spray paint, and princess wands!

I want to shop for Halloween costumes in my jammies:

Diapers.com: Sizes range from 0-5T. They have two day shipping (or less) if you decide to wait until the last minute and free shipping on all costumes. Very cute baby and toddler costumes with lots of choices!

Partybell.com: Large selection of costumes for kids and adults. Local mom, Hannah Martin, also a member of the Sonoma Valley Mother’s Club, said she ordered an owl costume for her son Colter and it came very quickly, the quality was great and the prices were really good!

Chasingfireflies.com: Another recommendation by a Sonoma mom of two, Lindsey Bresee, loves the online store and is ordering from them again this year. Beautiful costumes!

You are willing to drive 20 minutes to pick out a costume:

Spirit Halloween Store- For the largest selection of costumes, you should head to a Spirit Halloween store. They have one in Petaluma at 901 E. Washington St. The prices are a little high and you have to buy lots of accessories to have your child’s costume actually look like the picture on the bag but you can’t beat the number of choices.

Target: Rows and rows of costumes and they have the best prices but not necessarily the best quality. Be careful not to let your child wear their costume too many times before Halloween or you may be running over and purchasing a second costume (not that I would know from experience).
