Gift of the Nile Deconstructed in Sister Cities Series

Herodotus described Egypt as the gift of the Nile. The meaning is clear – without the Nile River’s cyclical patterns of flooding and drought, the topographical advantages of the Nile Valley and its suitability as a highway between distant lands, the land of the Pharaohs never would have been.

These topics and others will be explored Thursday night by Dr. Amer El-Ahraf in his lecture “The Ecology of the Nile,” is the last in the Windows to the World series presented by the Sonoma Community Center in partnership with Sonoma Sister Cities Association.

An American of Egyptian origin, Dr. Amer El-Ahraf examines Egypt’s relationship with the Nile from personal and academic viewpoints. A regular visitor to Egypt, he provides a description of the ecological relationship between the Nile and the Egyptian people in terms of the physical, biological and social environments as well as the interactive cultural factors including religion and language throughout Egyptian history, from Ancient Egypt to the Arab Spring.
