Sonoma's Vox Populi Sings the Hits in "Higher Ground"

Vox Populi, Sonoma’s own rock and roll choir, will be performing an eclectic mix of songs of love, life, reverence and (especially) irreverence from a wide catalog of popular artists for two nights next week in Sonoma.

Vox Populi has been entertaining sold-out audiences for five years, since their official founding in 2008.  Music director Mark Dennis leads the group of over 70 talented singers to perform sophisticated multi-harmony versions of well-known rock and roll, folk, R & B, gospel, and soul songs.  The Plan Be band will again back the choir to provide appropriate instrumental back-up.

This year, Vox Populi and Plan Be will be joined by special guest Ira Carter, mystic master of ceremonies, and the magical, mesmerizing belly dancer Nathalie Tedrich.

This summer's concert is titled "Higher Ground: The Gospel according to Vox Populai." They’ll be performing a mixed menu of songs – the poster uses the 10 Commandments metaphor to list artists such as Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Annie Lennox, Elton John and other artists only a little less sanctified.

If you know any songs by those artists, or know anybody in the 70-voice choir, you’ll have two chances to catch them next week: Monday, May 20 at the Sebastiani Theater, and Wednesday, May 22, at the Sonoma Community Center. Both shows start at 7:30.
