Driver Killed When Car Flips into Creek in West Marin County

A driver was killed after losing control of his car on Highway 1 in West Marin County on Tuesday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The car, a Honda, was traveling north on Highway 1 north of the town of Marshal at about 5:30 p.m. when the driver tried pass traffic ahead of him on the road by crossing over double yellow lines, the CHP said.

Approaching a curve in the road, the driver seemed to panic, according to witnesses.

He lost control of the car, which spun out and flipped onto its roof. It then skidded off the road into Marshal Creek where it became completely submerged.

Witnesses were able to help the car's passenger escape from the car. But they weren't able to free the driver.

When fire personnel arrived, they freed the driver and transported him and the passenger to Petaluma Valley Hospital, according to the CHP.

The driver was pronounced dead at the hospital, the CHP said. The passenger was treated for minor injuries and released.

The driver and passenger were both men from the Santa Rosa area, but their identities won't be released until their families have been informed.
