By Bay City News
Ten homes were evacuated this morning when a private contractor ruptured a 4-inch natural gas line during a street excavation project on Montgomery Drive, a Santa Rosa Fire Department battalion chief said.
Firefighters arrived within five minutes of the report of the significant gas leak at 10:41 a.m. at 1800 Montgomery Drive, Battalion Chief Mark Basque said.

The 13 people who were evacuated did not need help finding alternate shelter, Basque said. The fire department and PG&E monitored the air for flammability until the leak was secured, Basque said.
PG&E stopped the leak in about two hours, Basque said.

PG&E spokeswoman Brittany McKannay said this afternoon 11 residences will be without gas service until the line is repaired and pressure tested sometime between 10 p.m. and midnight.
PG&E crews will be on hand to re-light pilots tonight and tomorrow, McKannay said.
