Highway 121/Highway 12 Intersection Closed Christmas Night Due to Flooding

Motorists were advised to detour via Watmaugh and Napa roads.

Ongoing rain Christmas Day led to the closure once again of the intersection of highways 121 and 12, south of Sonoma.

CHP closed the area at about 8 p.m., according to Schell-Vista Fire Station staff.

High tide was expected at 1 a.m.

Motorists were advised to detour via Watmaugh or Napa roads.

It would be great if someone could research how much money was spent on this intersection since it was supposed to help alleviate flooding (seems worse now) and the fact that it never drains after the rain stops. However, I do feel safer now that there is a traffic signal there. I experienced and witnessed many near misses as well as passing the accident aftermath of people traveling south on 12 who failed to yield to 121 traffic.

Yes, rest assured I'll be following up on these stories. This is my first winter in the Sonoma area and I've reported on this intersection's closure from flooding three times in the past few weeks. One of those reports included video of the towing of cars that had been abandoned in the middle of the night in the water. I agree, more information is needed about what can be done and what is going to be done to remedy the situation. Another of my articles outlined a report on the problem by the Resource Conservation District, and how agencies are looking at reducing upstream runoff as a key to solving the problem.
