Update: Sonoma Man Killed In Head-On Crash Cause By Driver Who Fell Asleep

Update 2:36 p.m. via Bay City News: A Sonoma man died at a hospital this morning after his pickup truck was struck by a box truck traveling in the wrong lane of state Highway 121 at Sears Point in Sonoma County, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The head-on crash happened around 6:55 a.m. about a mile north of state Highway 37.

The driver of the 2011 International box truck, Daniel James Raurer, 27, of Rohnert Park, said he fell asleep while driving north on state Highway 121, CHP Officer Anna Paulson said.

Rauer's truck crossed into the southbound lane and struck a 2003 Ford F-250 pickup driven by 66-year-old Benny Clyde White, of Sonoma, Paulson said.

White suffered major injuries and was taken to the Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa where he died, Paulson said.

Rauer suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the same hospital.

One person died in a crash on state Highway 121 near the Sonoma Raceway this morning, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The accident was reported around 7 a.m. north of Sears Point. Initial reports indicated that the crash involved an SUV and a U-Haul truck, and that the deceased person was trapped in the SUV, which had overturned, according to the CHP.
