Teen Injured by 92-Year-Old Driver Due To Be Released Today

A 13-year-old boy who suffered a fractured skull when he was hit by a car on a Sonoma crosswalk was due be released from the hospital today, a Sonoma police sergeant said.

The accident occurred around 12:40 p.m. Saturday near Sassarini Elementary School.

Two boys were hit by a 2003 Toyota Corolla driven by 92-year-old Levon Arkelian, of Sonoma, while crossing Fifth Street West on a crosswalk at
Curtin Lane, Sgt. Spencer Crum said.

The 13-year-old boy was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa. His father said he was going to be released today, Sgt. Dave Thompson
said this morning.

The other victim, who is 14, went to Sonoma Valley Hospital and was treated for abrasions and released, Crum said.

The crosswalk in front of the school has flashing yellow lights embedded in the roadway and is marked with a sign with lights that flash when activated by a pedestrian, Crum said.

Witnesses and the boys said all the lights were activated when they crossed, Crum said.

Arkelian told investigators he didn't see the boys crossing the street, Crum said.

He was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and was referred to the Department of Motor Vehicles for a priority re-examination of his driver's license.
