Two Drivers Arrested on DUI Charges Had Kids in the Car

Desmond Ervin, 47, of Windsor had his 2-year-old child in the vehicle when arrested on Highway 101. Miriam Spedden, 38, of Monte Rio, allegedly left her 4-year-old daughter in her car while she went inside a bar.

The California Highway Patrol arrested two drivers in separate alleged incidents of driving while impaired with a child in the vehicle in Sonoma County Thursday night and this morning.

CHP Officer Greg White used a radar device to determine Desmond Ervin, 47, of Windsor, was driving a 1986 Chevrolet Corvette at 106 mph on northbound U.S. Highway 101 south of Lytton Springs Road in unincorporated Sonoma County around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, CHP Officer Marcus Hawkins said. When White stopped the Corvette he found Ervin's two-year-old child in the car, Hawkins said. Ervin was arrested for DUI and child endangerment.

Miriam Spedden, 38, of Monte Rio, left her 4-year-old daughter in her vehicle while she went inside a bar in Guerneville early this morning, Hawkins said. Spedden called 9-1-1 at 12:50 a.m. when she noticed her child was no longer in the vehicle, Hawkins said. Sonoma County sheriff's deputies and the CHP responded and determined Spedden was intoxicated when she drove to the bar, Hawkins said. Deputies located the child, who was with a relative, and Spedden was arrested for DUI and child endangerment.
