Papers Pulled for Two City Council Seats in November Election

This morning the city clerk began releasing applications for candidates for city council in November's election. The big news may be who is not running.

 

It's time to start thinking about another election in Sonoma.

With the finally certified, thanks to some close races and slow counting in Sonoma County, candidates can begin filing today for the two City Council seats up for election in November.

The two seats are currently held by Mayor and councilmember . Gallian announced her candidacy several weeks ago at a City Council meeting, but Mayor Sanders has yet to announce her intention, either publically or to the City Clerk's office.

Nomination papers can be picked up during regular offices hours from today, Monday July 16, until Friday, August 10. The nomination papers require that the candidate get 20 signatures from city residents endorsing their candidacy in order to qualify for the ballot.

Once the candidate turns in the application and signatures, and the registrar of voters validates the signatures, the candidacy becomes official and the name shows up on the November 6, 2012 ballot.

This morning took out papers, said city clerk . Cook is the owner/manager of a vineyard maintenance company, and is on the Board of Directors of the . He made an unsuccessful run for city council in 2010.

The only other people who have told Johann of their intent to run are Gallian, who is running for her second term but as of this morning has not pulled papers; and Cameron Stuckey, a fitness instructor and motivational speaker.

Madolyn Agrimonti, a former Daly City mayor and member of the , has also expressed interest.

The official nomination period ends at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 10, 2012.  If nomination papers for an incumbent are not filed by the last date of the filing period, the deadline for nominations for that incumbent’s office is extended to 5 p.m. on August 15, 2012. 

In Sonoma, this means if Sanders decides not to run for her third term, an extra three business days will be open for other candidates to file for the seat.

Once filed, a candidate may withdraw his or her nomination paper until the filing deadline of 5 p.m. on August 13, or 5 p.m. on August 16 if the deadline is extended.

The General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2012. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.
