Are We in an Earthquake Zone?

New US Geological Survey maps available online place Sonoma between two fault lines.

We all know that, along with beautiful weather and fantastic produce, earthquakes are part of the deal when you live in California.

But, on a day-to-day basis, how worried should we be about quakes? How likely is it that one will happen in our own backyard?

Now, you can find out.

For the first time ever, the California Geological Survey has posted online maps of earthquake zones and faults. The maps are available here. (Maps previously were not available online.) The new technology also allows residents to enter their address and find out if they're in a danger zone.

So, how likely is it that "the big one" will hit Sonoma?

Answer: sort of likely.

Sonoma sits sandwiched between two fault lines.  The Glen Ellen Quadrangle hosts a fault line that runs to the far west of the city, through Glen Ellen and the outskirts of El Verano. The Sears Point Quadrangle hosts a fault line which runs to the far south west of the city center.

Most addresses near to the city are in the free and clear zone. But many on the outskirts (mine, for instance) fall into the danger zone.

So, what to do (besides moving or never venturing to the  again)?

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has an earthquake preparedness guide in case you don't remember the Elementary School lecture (or, if like me, you grew up in a place more concerned with hail than earthquakes).

The guide includes supplies to keep on hand and tips for what to do in the event that an earthquake hits your home.

But, don't worry too much. After all, even the outskirts of Sonoma don't fall directly onto a fault line, just a danger area (eat that, Petaluma).
