City Council to Discuss Sonoma Clean Power, Water Rates, Keystone XL Pipeline

They are at it again: In addition to City business and local concerns, the Council will consider opposition to Canadian sand oil project.

The Community Meeting Room on Monday night will again be the scene of local discussion, consideration, policy evaluation and proclamations, as well as another toe tipped in the waters of extra-civic concern.

Among the Consent Calendar items, usually voted on as a bloc without discussion, is an application to renew “Bike-Friendly Community” status, authorizing Sonoma Ecology Center to apply for EPA funding, and approving the use of city streets for the 2013 Valley of the Moon Vintage Festival.

Regular Calendar items kick off with discussion to sign on with Sonoma Clean Power, the community choice aggregation program, allowing it to be offered to City of Sonoma residents. A couple Sonoma county bodies have rejected the program, most recently Cloverdale; the county itself is asking for outside advice from consultants. More information here.

The Public Works Director and City Engineer, Dan Takasugi, is asking council to direct city staff to pursue a “proactive” water supply strategy, and proceed with a review and update of the water rate structure and rate model.

Last on the Regular Calendar is discussion, consideration and possible action authorizing a letter urging President Obama to deny permits for the Keystone XL Pipeline project. The item was requested by Mayor Brown and Councilmember Barbose. More information about Keystone XL here.

The meeting begins at 6:00 pm, in the Community Meeeting Room next to the Police Station. See the agenda and information packet links on the City website.
