Preview of first City Council Budget Workshop

What's on the agenda for Thursday's meeting, the first chance to review the budget for FY 2011-12

Tomorrow night, Thur. June 2, a special City Budget Workshop is scheduled at 6 pm. It will be held at the ,  175 West First St. (behind the ).

It’s the first chance that the City Council will have to review the preliminary budget presented by city staff departments. Department heads have been working on their tentative budgets since March, according to Carol Giovanatto, assistant city manager and finance director.

“Basically the budget process is staff-driven,” she said. “We have these meetings in the form of workshops to give the City Council a chance to review, offer direction and perhaps suggest alternative budget solutions.” Public comment is allowed and anticipated.

If necessary a second Budget Workshop may be held later in the month, with a target of presenting a final budget to the City Council at their regular scheduled meeting on June 20. If the June 20 date is not workable under the budget review process, a special meeting of the City Council is possible.

Although there is no legal deadline set by the City for implementing a budget, the beginning of Fiscal Year 2011-12, on July 1, is usually the target date.
