Public Workshop on Replacement of Chase Street Bridge

That sweet little neighborhood bridge on Chase St. over Nathanson Creek is due for a structural retrofit, says Public Works, and there's a public workshop on April 30 to explain the project

Replacement of the Chase Street Bridge at Nathanson Creek, the Department says,  is needed to provide a safe and adequate creek crossing for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians. The bridge is a block north of W. MacArthur and a few yeards east of Broadway.

So they’ll be conducting a Public Workshop on Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at 6:00 p.m. to discuss and collect public input on the proposed Chase Street Bridge Replacement Project. The meeting will be held in the Community Meeting Room, 177 First Street West, Sonoma.

Nathanson Creek Preserve includes Sonoma Valley High School, Adele Harrison Middle School, a bike path, and a pedestrian trail. The Sonoma Ecology Center (SEC) and other entities have held creek cleanups and restoration workdays to remove invasive plant species and clean the channel.

Construction is currently planned to begin in the spring of 2014 with road closure expected in the summer of 2014. During construction, Chase Street at the bridge will be closed and all through traffic diverted around the site. Access to properties in the area will be maintained at all times during construction.

In general, the project consists of bridge removal and bridge reconstruction, placement of curb, gutter, sidewalk and driveways at the bridge ends, drainage improvements, tree removal, retaining wall replacement, striping and other related work. Up to three trees within the stream bank will need to be removed as part of the project.

The informal public workshop is intended to provide an opportunity for affected residents and the public to discuss and provide input regarding the project and develop an understanding of what can be expected during construction.

A short presentation will be provided at the beginning of the workshop, followed by a question-and-answer period. City staff and the City's bridge design consultant will be available to individually answer questions.

The initial estimate of probable project costs is approximately $1.9 million. Approximately $1.5 million of the cost is expected to be funded through Caltrans Highway Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation (HBRR) grants, and the remaining $400K will be paid from the City’s general fund.

A project Fact Sheet is available for viewing attached to this article, at Sonoma City Hall, and on the City's website under "Current Reports".
