Sewer Rates to Drop, Slightly, For Most

The City of Sonoma and the Valley of the Moon Water District will calculate a fluxtuating charge per unit based on use, which will make up 30 percent of the sewer bill.

 

Most residents can expect a slight drop in fees on their next bill, thanks to a shift in the way the Sonoma County Water Agency calculates sewer fees. 

In past years, each residence was charged a fee of $732, regardless of household size or sewer use.

Now, as part of a pilot project, the City of Sonoma and the Valley of the Moon Water District will calculate a fluxtuating charge per unit based on use, which will make up 30 percent of the sewer bill.

(The additional 70 percent, which officials say covers fees and infrasture for the District's Eighth Street East plant, will remain fixed.)

Most of the 16,000 users in the study will see lower costs, but about 700 users will face an increase, SCWA staff said in a city council meeting Monday.

There are approximately 16,000 users in the study, and while most will see lower costs, about 700 will show increases.

The new calculations will go into effect July 1, based on winter water usage.
