The county wants to replace the aging Watmaugh Bridge, while a group calling itself Citizens for the Preservation of Sonoma Historic Bridges prefers that the county retrofit the bridge instead.

The current bridge is 22-feet wide with no shoulders. The county, after proposing a 40-foot wide span, has scaled back the plans to a 32-foot bridge with two 11-foot traffic lanes and two 5-foot pedestrian/bike lanes.
