Lady Greyhounds Edge Dragons

Healdsburg holds on to defeat Sonoma Valley 42-39.

After dominating the visiting Dragons during the first half, Healdsburg nearly let the game slip from their grasp.  With the score tied with two minutes left, Healdsburg took the lead for a 42-39 victory Friday night.

The Lady Greyhound defense dominated the visiting Dragons early in the game, holding them scoreless for the first 5 minutes of the game.  Healdsburg took a commanding 21-5 lead at the end of the first half.

A different Dragon team came out to play in the third quarter.  Aggressive play, combined with costly errors and fouls by the Hounds gave Sonoma the edge they needed.  Out scoring the Hounds 25-6, Sonoma took a 30-27 at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter became a struggle to control the ball.  Healdsburg stopped Sonoma from scoring a field goal in the final quarter, but the Hounds’ foul trouble kept the Dragons in the game.  All of Sonoma’s final nine points came at the free throw line.   

With the clock running down, Healdsburg took the lead, 40-39.  Sonoma resorted to  committing fouls to stop the clock.  Healdsburg padded their lead and held strong to stop the Dragons from scoring, ending th game at 42-39.  

Senior Cassidy Jourdan lead the Hounds with 19 points, while Jersey Witous and Caroline Knef lead the Dragons with 5 points each.  

The Lady Greyhounds host the Windsor Jaguars next Wednesday evening, Jan.11 at 7:30 p.m.
