Jonny Gomes' Brother Will Coach and Be GM For Healdsburg Baseball Team

Joey Gomes will lead the Healdsburg Prune Packers, a historic team re-founded in 2012.

One member of the Gomes brother earned a World Series ring last month, and another took on a leading role with a local baseball team.

Joey Gomes, the older brother to Boston Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes, will be the new general manager and coach for the Healdsburg Prune Packers, a semi-professional baseball team formed in 1921.

The Prune Packers team was reborn in 2012 and will play next season as an expansion team in the Golden State Collegiate Baseball League.

The elder Gomes told the Healdsburg Tribune that he has already been in contact with college coaches in Oregon and Santa Clara to recruit players, and predicted the team will be "a Division 1 program within two years."

Like his brother, Joey Gomes was born in Petaluma and attended Casa Grande High School. He was a star college player and was drafted into the minor leagues in 2002, playing until 2011, according to a Facebook page for his baseball academy.
