Catalonian Traditions in Carneros, With Bubbles

The 20th annual Catalan Celebration at Gloria Ferrer was two days of Spanish immersion

For two warm days in the Sonoma sun, the came to life in Carneros. celebrated the traditions of northern Spain with food, music, merriment and of course the wines of the extended Ferrer family.

Many members of the Gloria Ferrer wine club were in attendance, and many more besides - sometimes the sheer numbers of celebrants overtook the celebration. But the quality of the fare, from paella cooked in huge shallow pans, grilled skewered chicken drizzled with pesto, fresh gazpacho and even brownies, added up to plenty of savory tapas for the tongue.

The palette was not left out: several sparkling wines from Gloria Ferrer and their Spanish cousin in cava, Freixenet, plus chardonnay, pinot noir, garnacha and other Spanish grape found their way into the branded flutes that came with the tickets.

Then there were the Gegants de Mataro - 14-foot statues of the king and queen of Catalan, dancing with stately grace high above the heads of the appreciative crowd.

Add to that the cooking demonstrations, wine seminar, classic guitar by Eric Symons, sparkling mojitos, grape stomping, group Sardana dancing and the Sol Flamenco Dance Troupe to end the day, added up to a brief, all too brief vacation to the enchantment of Catalonia.
