In Sonoma, Small is Big -- Who Knew???

Sonoma? In the Top Ten Friendliest towns in the U.S.?  Who Knew?
Countless travelers who responded to Conde Nast's survey, that's who.http://www.cntraveler.com/daily-traveler/2013/07/travel-us-cities-charleston-newark-branson-friendly-unfriendly_slideshow_item1_2
They said Sonoma was:

  • 'A down-to-earth alternative to Napa'
  • 'Laid back style and people'
  • 'Charming and picturesque'
  • 'Quaint yet up to date'
  • 'But above all . . . a wonderful place to unwind and just enjoy the day."
Who Knew?
Obviously not the Chamber of Commerce, the Vintners and Growers Association, local hotel operators, 'Protect Sonoma,' City Council's majority or even the Visitors' Bureau, who all insist Sonoma must be more like Napa in order to win the Greed Stakes race for the Tourist Dollar.  They insist we need more large hotels (not cozy small ones); more commercialization; more chain stores; more tasting rooms/event centers/rock concerts/NASCAR races, and probably more & bigger leaf-blowers to keep it all clean.
Who knew?
"Preserving Sonoma" knew, and said so at www.preservingsonoma.com and before City Council, where they were ridiculed by the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce as a 'vocal minority' whose hotel limitation initiative would find little support among residents.  Except, of course, for the hundreds & hundreds of voters who, in a few short weeks, eagerly signed Preserving Sonoma's petition to put the Hotel Limitation Initiative on the ballot; they knew, too.
Everyone who values what makes Sonoma special knows that the passage of the Hotel Limitation measure in November will help preserve our Top-Ten Town where tourists and - most importantly - those of us who live here, can continue to "unwind and just enjoy the day."
