Hula Performance at Ho'Ike in the Sonoma Plaza

Hula Mai's annual performance in the Grinstead Amphitheatre will include a lineup of two dozen dancers, slack-key guitar, gourd drums and more

Friday starting at 5:30 p.m., the fourth annual Ho' Ike will sway and sing its way into your Polynesian heart at the Grinstead Amphitheatre in the Plaza.

This live show of music, hula, and aloha is Hula Mai's gift to the people of Sonoma: a free two-hour extravaganza of authentic hula, chant, and Hawaiian music.

Again this year, the show's guest artist will be Patrick Landeza, the bay area's rising Hawaiian star, slack key guitarist, singer, and songwriter. In May Landeza became the first mainland musician to win a Na Hoku Hanohano Award award for his slack key album, "Slack Key Huaka‘i."

Hula Mai's annual performance in the Grinstead Amphitheatre will include a lineup of two dozen dancers performing both the modern (`Auana) style and traditional (Kahiko) forms of hula. The Hula Mai band will play as this year's dancers perform some of Hawaii's favorite `Auana, including "My Ginger Lei," "Pua Mana," and the famous "Song of Old Hawaii."

The program will also include several ancient Kahiko hula that will be accompanied by chanting to the beat of the ipu-heke, or gourd drum. The free performance will be presented from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 14 in the Grinstead Amphitheatre.

The Hula Mai dancers and band also perform throughout the year at a variety of venues in the Sonoma Valley. Hula workshops will again be offered through Vintage House in the fall.
