The Sonoma Valley Unified School District is headquartered in a complex on Railroad Avenue, to the northwest of Sonoma city in Boyles Hot Springs. The district's board meets every second Tuesday of the month, from September to May, at the Community Meeting Room at 177 First Street West in Sonoma. The meetings, which start at 6:30pm, are open to the public. An up-to-date calendar of school events is available on the district's website. The district oversees more than 4,600 students in five elementary schools, two charter schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. In 2010, the school district recieved a federal "Investing in Innovation" grant of almost $3 million to expand the science and language program started at El Verano Elementary, as well as the Exploratorium.
