The Sonoma Police Department is headquartered in a large building surrounded by fields on First Street West. Since…More 2004 the Sonoma City has worked with the County Sheriff's office to provide all policing needs for the city. In 2005 the department received a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety to create a full-time traffic safety unit.
The department is run by Chief Bret Sackett, who, according to its website employs two Sergeants, nine deputies, a School Resource Officer, a Traffic Officer, two Community Service Officers and two administrative positions.
The Sheriff's department runs a Volunteers in Policing program (better known as "V.I.P") that allows local citizens to volunteer their time to help the department in an administrative manner. It also operates a "Police Explorers" program, where young adults aged 15-20 learn basic crime control skills and learn about careers in law enforcement.
