Public Hearing in Sacramento Tuesday on State Developmental Centers

If you'd like to hear what is being done to improve the Sonoma Developmental Center - and the other similar hospitals in the state -- you might want to go to Sacramento on Tuesday, June 25, to meet with Mariko Yamada.

Assemblymember Mariko Yamada (D-Davis), Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on State Hospital and Developmental Center Safety, will hold an informational hearing at 2:30 p.m. in State Capitol, Room 127.  The hearing is open to the public.

“Safety for California’s Most Vulnerable: State Hospital and State Developmental Center Updates” will include testimony from agency officials, employee organizations, and community members who have been affected by incidents in these two state systems.

“Our committee intends to provide continued legislative oversight on behalf of the vulnerable residents at these facilities and the people who care for them,” Yamada said.

“This hearing is intended to review the progress of the implementation of safety procedures at our state hospitals and a briefing on other steps being undertaken, including the Administration’s new Task Force on the Future of Developmental Centers.”

Yamada’s district includes two facilities where some of the most serious events have occurred:  Napa State Hospital where an employee was murdered by a patient in 2010 and the Sonoma Developmental Center where resident sexual assaults were left uninvestigated by the internal law enforcement agency.
